We, the members of the faculty of Columbia University, call on President Lee Bollinger and the Columbia University Board of Trustees to enter immediately into good faith contract negotiations with the Graduate Workers of Columbia (GWC-UAW). In an email sent to the Columbia community on January 30th, 2018, the Provost announced that the university’s administration will not bargain with the graduate workers’ union despite an overwhelming vote in favor of unionization (72%). As faculty members at this university, we believe the administration’s actions endanger the moral and intellectual foundations on which this institution rests: first, by intentionally defying a legal certification from the National Labor Relations Board, and, second, by disregarding the democratic process, which it claims to stand for and promoted in the lead up to the December 2016 NLRB election. Indeed, in the immediate wake of the December 2016 election, Provost Coatsworth acknowledged in a university-wide email that through “open and respectful conversation that explained the arguments for and against unionization… the research and teaching assistants who voted have chosen to be represented by the United Auto Workers.”

Crucial among the principles essential to the university’s mission is a respect for the democratic process and the rule of law. As members of the faculty, it is our responsibility to defend those principles, for they are indispensable both to the pursuit of knowledge and the education of the next generation. We are disturbed by the Columbia administration’s willingness to abandon its own time-honored principles and call upon you to respect the ruling of the National Labor Relations Board, as well as the democratically ratified decision of the graduate workers.

Faculty Comments

“I stand with the students and hope the university will reconsider its position.”

“This is an essential step in labor relations and human rights.”

“At a time of ominous political reaction when unions have virtually been destroyed in this country, wealth disparity at obscene levels, and the middle class hemorrhaging badly, I strongly defend those who are struggling to build security into their lives and to unionize in defense of their interests. I want Columbia to stand for progressive values and the interests of those it employs at all levels.”

“Is this Columbia University or is it the Trump organization?”

“It is shameful that the University is playing ball with the Trump nominees to the NLRB. Just as it did back in the 1990s when I was a grad student at the university. Grad students are also employees and have voted clearly and overwhelmingly to unionize, as at some other campuses. As a professor who teaches on labor issues at SIPA, and also a proud member of ACT/UAW representing part-time faculty at The New School, I know how important a union, labor rights, and collective bargaining are to the well-being of student workers and contingent faculty alike and how they help universities function in a more inclusive and fair manner. The University’s attitude shames me as an employee and an alum. I offer my full solidarity to the grad students. Our cause is one.”

“I’m not sure unionization is in the best interests of graduate students, but Columbia’s recent decision not to bargain is cowardly and hypocritical. It is also disrupting relationships between graduate students (who rightly mistrust the institution) and faculty, and doing real damage to the university.”

“Shame on you, Columbia.”

“Adjunct Assistant Professors are exploited and have no benefits, work stability, or health insurance either. We should be striking with the Graduate Workers.”

Maria Abascal, Assistant Professor, Sociology, GSAS
