{"id":3493,"date":"2020-03-02T18:23:14","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/columbiagradunion.org\/?p=3493"},"modified":"2020-03-02T18:23:14","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:23:14","slug":"bargaining-continues-strike-authorization-vote-opens-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/columbiagradunion.org\/2020\/03\/02\/bargaining-continues-strike-authorization-vote-opens-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Bargaining continues, strike authorization vote opens today!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear student workers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the good news.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are close to tentative agreement on <\/span><b>Holidays, Workload,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Intellectual Property<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the frustrating news.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia maintains their regressive position that grievances alleging discrimination or harassment by the University shall not be subject to the contract\u2019s grievance procedure, and be exclusively processed through the EOAA. This rules out the option of third-party neutral arbitration of discrimination or harassment claims for those who feel it is necessary to achieve real recourse. For more background, read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/opinion\/2020\/02\/26\/columbia-needs-to-stop-gambling-with-the-trauma-of-sexual-harassment-survivors-at-the-bargaining-table\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this op-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by our student allies!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia maintains their position that only doctoral student workers on salaried appointments should have the rights, protections, and benefits of the contract we are bargaining.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia continues to refuse to pay for student workers, who have a demonstrated concern, to receive on-demand testing for toxic exposures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia wants to maintain unilateral decision-making power over aspects of our working lives \u201cin any way related to the academic mission of the university.\u201d But, as academic teachers and researchers, exactly what aspects of our working conditions do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relate in some way to Columbia\u2019s academic mission?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, Columbia thinks if our work is part of our education, then it should be exclusively the university\u2019s right to decide the terms and conditions of our employment. But of course, that we are learning on the job doesn\u2019t make our work any less protected by labor law and deserving of fair compensation and protections by a contract.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the bargaining session on March 16 [2:30PM\/Mudd 524] will be dedicated to a broad discussion of our <\/span><b>Recognition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Article\u2014who gets to be covered by the contract\u2014and the University\u2019s \u2018academic purview\u2019\u2014what labor rights, interests, and issues should be in the contract (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiagradunion.org\/bargaining\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for our position on these questions).
