Columbia University&#8217;s persistent stonewalling for these two years leaves us no choice but to escalate in our efforts to ensure decent conditions for student workers. If we do not reach a contract by February 25th, we will announce a deadline by which we will strike in the spring semester. This event will be livestreamed to include student workers and supporters across the globe.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiagradunion.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=bf112f248486fb48a139e6aa2&amp;id=4091fa060e&amp;e=9bf023bbab\">7 PM ET Virtual Rally<\/a>: We will meet on Zoom to affirm the strike announcement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At both events, GWC workers will share testimonials about why we need a fair contract now. The urgency of this contract is recognized and supported on local and national levels. Elected politicians and workers from unions at universities across the country will join to declare their support and solidarity with our fight.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><u><strong>WE DEMAND:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Full recognition<\/strong>\u00a0of the NLRB-certified bargaining unit, which is consistent with the Bargaining Framework Agreement of November 2018;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Union shop<\/strong>, which creates an equitable system of distributing the cost of union representation over all workers in the unit;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Real recourse<\/strong>\u00a0for cases of harassment and discrimination and access to the grievance and arbitration procedure;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Improvements to compensation, funding length, and health benefits<\/strong>\u00a0that create a sustainable work environment for all, not just the ones who have a safety net for loss of funding or extraneous healthcare costs, especially in light of COVID-19 financial difficulties.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Last Spring,\u00a0<strong>we voted 96% YES to authorize the bargaining committee to call a strike<\/strong>\u00a0if needed to achieve a fair contract. It is in Columbia\u2019s power to avert a strike by giving us the contract we deserve after two years of bargaining.
