GWC-UAW is co-sponsoring turnout from Columbia, for the March for Science in D.C. and the satellite march in NYC with the Engineering Graduate Student Council (EGSC) the Columbia University Science Policy Initiative (CUSP) the Graduate Student Organization (GSO) Queer in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (QSTEM) and the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC) on April 22nd.

The purpose of the march is to support the history of scientific discoveries and inquiries that have enriched our lives and communities. Protecting this tradition is now more urgent than ever given the recent proposed cuts to federal investment in scientific research. The current administration has not only blocked scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Agriculture from communicating with the public and the press but has also proposed cuts to the EPA budget by 31% ($2.5 billion) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) budget by 18% ($5.8 billion).
Our union has a long history of being a vehicle to amplify the political voice of our members. In January we coordinated hundreds of people to attend the Women’s March and are excited to continue that legacy with the March for Science. Our union represents tens of thousands of scientists who work as postdoctoral researchers, graduate research assistants, and adjunct faculty at Columbia as well as from the University of Washington, University of California, New York University, University of Connecticut and University of Massachusetts. Most of our work relies on federal funding, and the UAW has become a national partner for the March for Science to support members across the country as we advocate for our livelihood.
As part of these efforts, we are chartering several buses to help people travel to D.C. If you are interested in more science advocacy events, the braiNY team along with CUSP, and the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain and Behavior Institute at Columbia University is presenting a workshop designed to introduce advocacy for neuroscience as well as to gain practical skill and explain how to use this knowledge for the future. Come to our March general meeting tonight. We will discuss the next steps in our campaign to get Columbia to start bargaining, and the Bargaining Committee will give a report on their preparations, which will move us forward despite the University’s resistance.
