The GWC Organizing Committee stands in solidarity and support with the detained people of Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. After severe heat and power failures during the polar vortex, following a month of intermittent heating, thousands of detained people in the MDC were left in frigid temperatures, possibly as low as 34F inside the detention center, for several days. In particular, we support the statement released in response to the Federal District Court’s ruling  that no oversight was needed to improve conditions at MDC. We echo the statement that “the emergency did not create inhumane conditions at MDC, but instead only intensified the violent nature of incarceration itself.”
